Choose experiences with care
Culture & heritage
Sigiriya, the ancient cities, Kandy and Galle offer different perspectives on the island’s history. UNESCO lists Sigiriya and Galle among Sri Lanka’s World Heritage properties. Treat active religious sites as places of worship: follow local dress guidance, respect photography restrictions and allow worshippers space.
Beaches & coastal days
Decide whether you want a lively base, surf lessons or quiet time beside the sea. A beach’s appearance does not establish whether it is safe for swimming. Follow local warnings and choose supervised activities appropriate to your ability.
Tea country & walking
Ella and the wider hill country invite slower exploration. Plan a manageable walk, allow for rain and take an extra layer. Ask permission before entering working estates or private land. Choose an alternative activity if conditions make a route unsuitable.
Wildlife & nature
A wildlife outing is an opportunity to observe animals in their habitat; sightings are never guaranteed. Ask operators about vehicle crowding and animal welfare before booking. Avoid feeding, handling or chasing wildlife for photographs.
Food & everyday life
Leave room for a market visit, a neighbourhood café or a cooking experience. Ask before photographing vendors and pay agreed prices for the services you use. Everyday encounters should be respectful, not staged around the visitor.
One useful planning rule
Choose one anchor activity per day. Everything else should fit around it without turning the day into a race.
